Will a Divorce Hotel Work in Vegas?

Nevada has a history of being the place to come from a quickie divorce. Here’s a modern twist on that old idea.

Jim Halfens, a Dutch entrepreneur, is working with hotels around the U.S. to introduce “Divorce Hotel,” a week-end program for couples who want a speedy divorce decree.

Here’s how it works: He and she check in Friday, married. Each stays in their own hotel rooms, although one couple spent their final night married together in the honeymoon suite. With the help of mediators and independent lawyers, the couple checks out on Sunday, divorce papers in hand. All for a flat fee, of course.

The Divorce Hotel provides a first-class hotel along with the legal work for fees between $3,500 and $10,000. The American Bar Association estimates  the garden variety of American divorces cost between $5,000 and $20,000.

Throw in some Cirque du Soleil tickets and it might work, eh? Divorce Las Vegas 2012 style. What do you think?

P.S. 17 couples in the Netherlands already have gotten divorced through the Divorce Hotel program.
